"Caractors" or "Anthon" manuscript

We don't have the actual Anthon transcript. The "caractors" document is in the handwriting of John Whitmer. We don't know what he copied it from. The plates themselves? Another copy of the plates someone else made?

Later, Anthon described the characters Harris brought to him as resembling an Aztec calendar, but there are lots of reasons to question that.
