Display in the museum at the Crystal River, Florida mound complex showing the lines of trade between the Crystal River population and others. [Around 6,500 people lived at the site.] Copper came from Michigan and Ohio, other materials came from the Yucatan area. If you engage the staff at the museum and ask questions about this map, they will tell you that it's likely that the Yucatan and Crystal River had regular back-and-forth contact across the Gulf of Mexico using large, long canoes; the same type observed by Columbus and others. The site was established around 500 BC.
